The Journey That Never Ends

Image
Hello travelers! I guess I should really be saying farewell, but I'm having a tough time accepting the fact that this will be my last post on Roam Sweet Roam. You know, I had some major doubts when I created this blog. I would ask myself,  Can I talk about travel for a whole 10 weeks? Will I be able to entertain my audience and keep their interest?  All those months ago, I seriously didn't know if Roam Sweet Roam was the thing for me, but now that I'm here writing my last post, I couldn't have imagined choosing any other topic than travel. To be quite honest, I almost feel sort of nostalgic, much like how I felt when I knew I was going to be graduating high school and leaving those times behind. I've been working on this blog for so long now. It's a little piece of me, and I'm kind of sad to see it go. I've seen blogging less of an assignment and more of a medium through which I can express myself. Words hold immense power, allowing us to explain all...

Welcome to My Home

Hey there, travelers! So for those of you who don't know, I'm from a tiny town in northeast New Jersey. Now when I say tiny, I mean a population of 5,000 people kind of tiny. I went to a regional high school, so in my case, that means my school was made up of students from 4 different towns. And when I say northeast New Jersey, I mean the absolute northeast you can possibly travel to in the state. Only minutes from the New York state line, and about half an hour from New York City (or just "The City," as we say). In the movie Zoolander 2, Ben Stiller plays the character Derek, who starts off as a "hermit crab," living in a remote cabin the frozen wastes of "Extreme Northern New Jersey". That scene made all of us in the theater laugh pretty hard. "Extreme Northern New Jersey" • Google I wanted to get close and personal this week, and tell you guys all about my home state! But first, I have to let you know that you should not on...

My Favorite Places on Campus

Image
Hey there, travelers! How are you doing today? I'd like to welcome you to this week's post in which I'll be talking about my favorite places on campus, as part of my State College travel series. You can check out my other article on the Arboretum by clicking here . I figure that since I've spent so much time talking about foreign countries and traveling abroad, I should also try to bring things closer to home every once in a while, too. Happy Valley is a really cool place, and I've come up with a list of my favorite places on campus so far. Let's dive right in! Au Bon Pain • Café & Bakery You probably know about the Au Bon Pain in between the Palmer Museum of Art and the Zoller Gallery, but what you might not know is that there is another ABP in the Kern Graduate Building, located right next to the Nittany Lion Shrine. My friend Gillian shared this information with me, and I've been going to the this location ever since. Kern is a really nice buildi...

What It Means To Me

Image
Hello! My name is Marco Gómez, and I've come to the realization -- 6 posts into the semester -- that I never got around to fully explaining why I chose travel as the topic for my blog. I mean, who does that? Talk about skipping formalities. I'm sitting here at my desk in complete and utter shock, wondering how I thought it would be okay to skip the introduction and jump right into the middle of things. I might as well turn in my blogger resignation letter. In any case, I'm determined to fix that problem in today's post. So, would you care to go on a trip with me? We won't be traveling abroad as in other posts, but rather, exploring my mind. It's bigger on the inside than it may appear on the outside, I promise. So, without further ado: What Travel Means To Me Via Fletcher Art Travel means freedom, and getting lost in the most wonderful of ways.  When I travel, whether domestic or abroad, I try not to stick to Google Maps for every little directi...

All About Travel

Image
Hey there traveler! Welcome to this week's post. So far on this blog, I've covered a few different things. From  Japan  and the  Arboretum , to  travel mishaps  and  packing , I like to think I've covered a fair amount of ground. But travel can mean so many things to so many people. It's a very broad topic, and there are tons of little subtopics that can be explored. In today's post, I'd like to cover more ground and share some really cool travel facts from this  Buzzfeed article . Who knows? You might learn something new or be inspired to get out of your seat and go on an adventure. Enjoy! ~~~ Courtesy of ICE Currency Exchange Studies show that money spent on travel  makes you happier   than money spent on material goods. You could spend all of your money on things at the mall,  or  you could spend it to travel somewhere new and exciting! I like buying little trinkets and mementos of the places I travel to. For example,...

Before The Travel Begins

Packing. Oh, packing. We all love the end product, but hate the process. It doesn't matter where you're going; if it requires a suitcase, then you are bound to feel physically, mentally, and emotionally drained by the end of it. There is the fear of underpacking, in which you fear that you have forgotten an important item or two. If you're anything like me, that fear kicks in after I've already zipped up my suitcase, which leads me to take everything out again and start from square one. I definitely would not call that a good time. Avoid if possible. Overpacking is an even more dangerous game, one that usually does not end well for someone like me. I have a really bad habit of doing this, but I like to think that I have a fair argument: it's better to be overprepared than underprepared. But...that just so happens to also mean risking hefty fines and sweating in anticipation as you weigh your suitcase at the airport check-in desk. I'm going to share a little ...

From Adventure to Misadventure

Image
Good hello! How are you doing today? Extremely well, I hope. You know, I had a great time writing last week's post , and could think of no better idea for this week's post than to continue with my funny travel stories. Heaven knows they're endless. It wasn't a good vacation or family trip if you don't have something to laugh about, am I right? So without further ado, here is Travel Mishaps Part 2: From Adventure to Misadventure. 1. Hotel room turned sparring dojo.  Tumblr For my 10th birthday, my parents surprised me with a vacation to Mexico. It was my favorite birthday of all time. But I was a total rascal as a kid. I had a bad habit of hiding places and scaring the life out of people. One night, my sister came back from the beach and walked into our hotel room, which I had made completely dark by turning all the lights off. She went into the bedroom that we were sharing, and as she was feeling around for the light switch, I popped out of the closet ...
